Courses are total immersion study of Italian language and culture combining oral and written expression. Emphasis is on building communicative proficiency along with a basic command of Italian grammar. A variety of resources (journals, reviews, magazines, commercials, TV ads, video clips and music) expose students to the sights and sounds of contemporary Italy. Classes are restricted to a maximum of 10 students to optimize language acquisition.
This course explores chronologically the art produced by civilizations and cultures that occupied Sicily for over 2000 years.
Beginning with the Greeks' first colony of Naxos and their significant impact on Sicilian art, students move on to Roman artistic ingenuity, the vibrant Byzantine period, the rebirth of antiquity in the Renaissance, the Catholic response to the Reformation, and the exuberant Sicilian Baroque art and architecture. Sicily and Taormina specifically, offer a wonderful opportunity to study these various periods providing countless celebrated examples of art.

This course explores chronologically the literature produced by Sicilian authors representing the rich cultures which have influenced Sicily including its two Nobel Prize in Literature recipients. Additional works written by renowned international authors who spent time in Sicily and wrote about the island will be included.

This course presents a comprehensive overview of Sicilian history beginning with the prehistoric era through to present day. The
course is built around lectures examining the history of Sicily and the influences of the many nations which have ruled the island.
On site lectures enhance studies (ex. Greek Theater, Roman Naumachia)

● ITC 403 Many Manifestations of Italian Culture (language study and cultural lectures in English)
This course introduces students to the history of Italian (particularly Sicilian) culture through immersion, observation and
reflection. Students examine influences such as Mt. Etna, the Mafia, mythology, Arabic Poets and the Greek Theater. Language
study is included to facilitate and enhance the immersion experience.

● LI 431 Camilleri's Commissario Montalbano: Detective Stories in Modern Sicily (in English)
This course is designed for students who are not only eager to have a better understanding of the author/phenomenon Andrea
Camilleri and his literary works, but also to have a better grasp of the Sicilian culture and the various literary and linguistic genres
used by Camilleri and other contemporary authors. Supplemental fee required for 2 full day field trips (Agrigento/Porto Empedocle
and Ragusa).

● LI 443 Cinema of the Mediterranean Through the Italian Lens
This course explores the rich, diverse Mediterranean region by analyzing the similarities and differences amongst the many
cultures represented. Focus is on the people, history, economics, languages and politics of the region as seen through the Italian
perspective. Course topics covered include: Reunification, World War II, the image and role of women, morality and the Church,
the Mafia, and the delicate balance of multiculturalism in the South. Students receive passes for entrance to the Taormina
International Film Festival including film viewings, lectures, and workshops led by the directors, producers, critics and actors.
Earphones provide translations of film festival lectures.

● ITC 413 Mediterranean Roots and Culture of Sicily (in English)
Combination city program: First Week in Taormina and Second Week in Siracusa
Sicily's history is entrenched with the diverse cultures of the Mediterranean reflected in its art, architecture, food and culture. It is
the land where Archimedes taught, Saint Paul preached and Pirandello wrote. The course begins with immersion Italian language
and culture study in Taormina, nicknamed the Pearl of the Mediterranean and finishes in Siracusa near the mythological Spring of
Arethusa with an exploration into the history and culture of Sicily as a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab emirate and a
Norman kingdom. No prerequisite for previous language study; all levels available.
