January intersession in the history and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean:
The Program in Sicily includes 1 week spent in historic Taormina/Naxos (founded in 734 BC) and 2 weeks in Syracuse (founded in 733 BC) – the oldest Greek cities of Sicily. The program includes a three credit class examining the archaeology and history of the ancient Mediterranean, enabling students to study the history and culture of Western Civilization within the unique context of Sicily, a variety of fieldtrips and a one credit “Italian Conversation” language class. The program is designed to enable students to get the very most out of their cultural experience in Sicily and to understand what Sicily has to offer, from the ancient world to the 21st
century.
Program outline:
● One week on site in Taormina (December 29th 2007- January 1st 2008)
● Two weeks on site in Syracuse (January 1st 2008 - January 20th 2008)
● One [1] credit undergraduate “Italian Conversation” language course (20 hours intensive full-immersion Italian language study)
● Three [3] credit undergraduate course in the archaeology, art and history of the ancient Mediterranean: “Ancient Sicily from Aeneas to Justinian” CA AH 252
● housing in the historic centers of Taormina and Syracuse
● entrance fees to sites and museums
