Italian women have inspired, charmed, instilled fear, supported and led throughout the centuries. Tornatore, Visconti, Rosi and Rosellini are among the many talented directors who have contributed cinematic masterpieces which highlight Sicilian history, culture and the many roles that Italian and specifically Sicilian women have played.

Course Description:
This course examines the many facets of and from Italian women beginning in the Middle Ages until the present. Through literature and cinema the historical roles of Italian women and the changing roles of present day Italian women are explored. Readings are in translation (English) and films will be viewed with English subtitles. The course traces the evolution of women through roles as mother, as liberator, as crazy, as beauty, as feminist. Comparisons of feminist movements in other cultures will also be explored. Students will be required to prepare a class presentation and complete a final exam.
