MU 451: Music of Italy: the Opera on XIX and XX century
June – 1st to 15th in Taormina, Sicily
Earn Three US University Credits in a Music of Italy course in a Two Week June Intensive Session in Taormina, Sicily. Course combines daily lectures in English with on site lectures at the Teatro Massimo, the Bellini Museum and the Music Conservatory at Catania. Attendance at a minimum of one concert is included in the program. Taormina’s Annual Taormina Arte Festival provides a magnificent backdrop for a course in music with its concerts in the Teatro Greco and Palazzo Congressi and world class art exhibits scattered in historical buildings throughout the city.
Course description: This course journeys into Italian music and its historical and cultural contexts beginning with the 18th century up to the present. Major works will be studied from a variety of genres along with an exploration of the other fine arts that shared the spotlight during the work’s historical period. The course is not restricted to music majors; it is open to anyone interested in studying the rich tradition of the Music of Italy and the integral role music plays in the Italian culture.
