LI 431 Camilleri's Commissario Montalbano: Detective Stories in Modern Sicily (in English)

This course is designed for students who are not only eager to have a better understanding of the author/phenomenon Andrea Camilleri and his literary works, but also to have a better grasp of the Sicilian culture and the various literary and linguistic genres used by Camilleri and other contemporary authors. The course is taught in English and there are no pre-requisites, except a desire to learn. Two full day field trips to Agrigento/Porto Empedocle and Ragusa allow students to explore the settings for Camilleri’s novels. Viewing of television adaptations of Camilleri’s books and cultural activities make this course a dynamic academic experience. Please be aware that some of the films and texts may contain adult themes and language (and in the case of the films some nudity may be present).

By studying and appreciating the world of the author Andrea Camilleri and his literary creations, students are introduced to Italian (and more specifically Sicilian) culture, history and literature and the socio-historical circumstances of the time.
