Welcome to the Study Abroad in Italy website!

babilonia-language-school-taormina-sicilyThis site has been especially developed for U.S. University students who want to study in Italy and attend a study abroad program in Italy, and particularly in Sicily, and have their Italian studies in Italy granted academic credits. Courses at Babilonia - Center for Italian Studies are offered in art, history, literature, cinema, geology, archeology, politics and humanities which enrich not only Italian Studies majors, but also majors in a variety of disciplines.
This site has also been developed to support U.S. teachers of Italian, teachers and students in AP Italian programs, Italian Departments and Study Abroad Offices in the USA, in establishing their own Study Abroad in Italy, Sicily or faculty led programs in Sicily.
Our Study Abroad in Italy Center is a hosting institution for several Italian Departments and Study Abroad Programs, for whom we have developed programs for independent students or faculty led customized programs.

A quaint medieval city, Taormina’s charm captivates students as they find themselves welcomed into the everyday life of this vibrant community.
Semester study abroad students attend classes in a historical 19th century building where classes are limited to a maximum of 10 students. The exceptionally low teacher to student ratio provides individual attention to each student, accelerating Italian language acquisition and promoting lively discussion in Italian studies courses.

summer-termSummer study abroad in Italy students discover that Taormina, Sicily has a high caliber vibrant art community. Students enrolled in the Summer Term Study in Italy, Sicily programs participate in our Center for Italian Language and Culture's weekly social and cultural activities including Italian Cinema, Italian Art, Literature and History lectures...
Language courses are total immersion study of Italian language and culture combining oral and written expression. Emphasis is on building communicative proficiency along with a basic command of Italian grammar. A variety of resources (journals, reviews, magazines, commercials, TV ads, video clips and music) expose students to the sights and sounds of contemporary Italy. Classes are restricted to a maximum of 12 students to optimize language acquisition.

Two, three and four week January Winter Break options allow students enrolled in the Study Abroad in Italy, Sicily January Term Intersession Winter Break Program to complete 3 to 6 credits in Italian language and/or Italian literature, cinema, art history or history courses taught in either English or Italian. Italian Studies students as well as students seeking a short term study abroad experience can enroll in the January Term Programs in Sicily.

Graduate courses in Italian Studies in Italy, Sicily
Graduate students and teachers can earn up to 9 graduate credits for intensive Italian Studies courses taught in Italian or English taken at Babilonia - Center for Italian Language and Culture. Graduate students may transfer courses directly into their home institutions or earn graduate credits through Auburn University. Teachers can also earn professional development credits for graduate courses in Italian Studies. Babilonia - Center for Italian Language and Culture is a recognized institution approved for students receiving FLAS (Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships) grants through their home institutions.

AP Advanced Placement Italian Preparation Courses

Thanks to the advocacy of the Italian Embassy the College Board has announced that the first AP Italian Language and Culture Exam will be administered in May 2012 giving high school students the opportunity to earn college credits for their Italian language study. The Babilonia - Center for Italian Language and Culture AP Prep Program was designed by one of the developers of the AP Italian Language Exam who then trained our faculty in the various facets and expectations of the AP exam.

High School Vacation Week

Babilonia - Center for Italian Language and Culture's location in Taormina, Sicily, the Pearl of the Mediterranean, is an ideal setting for high school students to study abroad in Italy and advance their Italian language proficiency. Taormina is safe, compact, and overflowing with Sicilian hospitality.

High school students live with host families and enjoy breakfast and dinner with the families. Our host families are carefully selected and many of the families have been hosting Babilonia students for many years, enthusiastically sharing their Italian culture with the students. Dinner time conversations are lively and provide additional language and culture exposure for the student.
